ELECTROCOAGULATION FAQS:

WHAT IS ELECTROCOAGULATION AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Electrocoagulation is a procedure that uses a high-frequency electrical current that causes the coagulation of blood or other tissues to treat skin blemishes.

WHAT CAN BE TREATED WITH ELECTROCOAGULATION?

Electrocoagulation can be used to successfully treat the following skin conditions; see below for a more in-depth description:

  • Cherry angioma removal, also called ruby points or blood spots
  • Spider angioma removal
  • Skin tag removal
  • Milia or whitehead removal
  • Sebaceous hyperplasia removal
  • Cholesterol deposit removal
  • Seborrheic keratosis removal
  • Dermatosis papulosa nigra removal
  • Comedones removal, also called clogged pores.

WHAT DOES ELECTROCOAGULATION FEEL LIKE?

Most people find the treatment very tolerable, there may be a mild tingling or pinching sensation on the treatment area.  During the treatment we apply a topical anesthetic, at no additional cost, and most of the discomfort is diminished.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF ELECTROCOAGULATION?

With proper after care there are no long-term side effects.  Short term there may be redness, tenderness, and occasionally mild swelling.

HOW DOES ELECTROCOAGULATION WORK?

A fine tipped sterile probe is placed on the surface of the blemish.  Low level radio frequency and direct current passes through the probe to the skin condition being treated.  For spider angiomas and telangiectasia, the blood in the tiny vessels is clotted or coagulated and stops flowing, the vessel is naturally absorbed into the surrounding tissue and will disappear.

Skin tags, cherry angioma, milia, sebaceous hyperplasia, cholesterol deposits, seborrheic keratosis, dermatosis papulos nigra and comedones will be removed during the treatment or fall off within days after the treatment.

HOW LONG IS THE HEALING TIME?

Most blemishes are fully removed or treated at the time of the first appointment with little to no evidence there was anything there prior to the treatment.  If there is a post treatment wound it is usually very small and the “outer healing” process takes 2 to 5 days depending on the individual.

“Outer healing” is the process where the skin heals from the outside in.  The body protects itself to prevent bacteria from entering a wound by healing the outside first, inner healing continues after that for 8 weeks or more.

IS ELECTROCOAGULATION SAFE?

Electrocoagulation has been in use for the treatment of minor skin conditions for many years and has been found to be safe and effective.

WHAT ARE THE AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ELECTROCOAGULATION?

The most important aftercare instructions are:

  • keep the treatment area clean and dry,
  • refrain from sun exposure, and
  • apply aftercare ointment.

Detailed aftercare instructions are provided at the consultation, we are available to answer questions any time.

WILL THE SKIN CONDITION I HAVE TREATED RETURN?

The treatment will eliminate the skin blemish permanently; however, it will not prevent new skin blemishes from forming.

DESCRIPTIONS OF SKIN CONDITIONS TREATED WITH ELECTROCOAGULATION:

1. Telangiectasia (dilated capillaries or spider veins)

Telangiectasia are tiny dilated blood vessels that are visible through the skin.  These tiny, superficial dilated blood vessels appear as red wavy lines that are usually around the nose, cheeks and on the chest.  Telangiectasia are benign and can be removed for cosmetic reasons.

2. Cherry angioma (ruby points or blood spots)

Cherry angiomas are an accumulation or cluster of blood vessels in the skin and show up as red bumps and can be found on any part of the body.  They do not cause any symptoms but may bleed due to friction. Cherry angiomas are benign, they can be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated.

3. Spider angioma (spider naevus)

Spider angioma is a combination of a cherry angioma in the centre and dilated capillaries that radiate outwards similar to a spider web.  Spider angiomas are benign and can be removed for cosmetic reasons.

4. Skin Tags

Skin tags are small growths of skin, usually skin color or slightly darker and range in size and appearance; skin tags can be long or flat.  Skin tags can be found anywhere on the body, most commonly on the eyelids, armpits, groin, upper chest, and neck.

It is not clear exactly what causes skin tags, they may be caused by skin chafing against other skin or clothing.  They are more common in skin creases or folds, the incidence of skin tags increases with age.

Skin tags are benign and can be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated.

5. Milia or whiteheads

Milia occur when keratin becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin.  Keratin is a strong protein that’s typically found in skin tissues, hair, and nail cells.  Milia are commonly found on the face, often on and around the eyes.

Milia can develop when the skin loses its natural ability to exfoliate as a result of aging.  They are benign and can be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated.

6. Sebaceous hyperplasia

Sebaceous hyperplasia causes skin coloured, white or yellow-tinged shiny bumps on the skin, this and occurs when the sebaceous glands become enlarged with trapped sebum.  The size ranges from 1 or 2 millimeters to several millimeters.  Each follicle has a sebaceous gland that produces sebum, a lipid which keeps the skin supple and hydrated.

Sebaceous hyperplasia is benign and can be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated.

7. Cholesterol deposits

Cholesterol deposits or xanthomas are fatty deposits that build up under the skin that appear as soft, flat, yellowish lumps. Cholesterol deposits tend to appear on the upper and lower eyelids, near the inner corner of the eye, and often develop symmetrically around both eyes, but they can develop anywhere on the body.  A cholesterol deposit on an eyelid is called xanthelasma palpebra.

Cholesterol deposits are benign, they can be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated.

8. Seborrheic keratosis

Seborrheic keratosis appears in varying degrees of pigmentation, starting out as a light brown color becoming darker and more waxy, scaly, wart-like and slightly elevated in appearance.  These growths can appear on the face, chest, shoulders or back.

Seborrheic keratosis is not believed to be related to sun exposure, they are not contagious and do not spread.  They may show up as a individually, but more often develop in clusters.  Seborrheic keratoses are normally painless and can be removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated.

9. Dermatosis papulosa nigra

Dermatosis papulosa nigra appear as small skin color or dark spots on the face, neck, chest, and back, most commonly around the cheekbones and eyes; they may be flat or look similar to a skin tag.  Dermatosis papulosa nigra are usually smooth, round, and flat, the size ranges between 1 to 5 millimeters.

This condition occurs most frequently in dark-skinned individuals; dermatosis papulosa nigra can be safely removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated.

10. Comedones

A comedone is a clogged follicle in the skin, keratin and sebum blocks the follicle, also known as a blackhead.  The electrocoagulation treatment removes the comedone and creates collagen in at the opening of the follicle which in turn closes the pore.  Comedones are benign and can be removed for cosmetic reasons.
